letter to the editor on the bnn article: research on new types of nuclear reactors from november 18, 2017 from the region

as can be read in the bnn article, much of that evening remained with the lecture by wistleblower dr. rainer moormann writes a book with seven seals on his research on fourth-generation nuclear reactors and his work at the jülich research center. however, despite the enormous scientific depth of the statements, what was always on the surface and could be understood even by non-physicists or non-chemists, takes away the meaning of the question mark in the title.

it is certain that the researchers at kit and jrc (formerly itu u003d institute for transuranic elements) in karlsruhe in the leopoldshafen and linkenheim districts, but also the approval authorities in stuttgart, want to fool us with the term “safety research”. it's actually easy to see that this is the case: from the huge amounts of radioactive materials stored there, which are necessary for the construction of new nuclear reactors and their fuels and research on them. the research work and pre-series production on liquid salt fuels carried out there is not purely “safety research”, but concerns research into new 4th generation nuclear reactors, which is expressly prohibited by the ministry of the environment. as a reminder: germany is phasing out nuclear technology by 2022.

the scientist neatly explained that, for example, because of the extremely high risks associated with nuclear power plants, almost all work on nuclear power plants can be classified as safety-related: “development work is being redefined as safety work.”
therefore, he urgently called for the applicable safety definition to be clarified at the political level.

the myths around it also had to be understood the 4th generation thorium reactors, which our researchers also like to advertise here. they are hoping for a re-entry into nuclear energy in germany with arguments such as: they are highly safe, have few disposal problems, are sustainable or even economical... all claims/lies (which only serve to secure jobs and prestige). the cooperation between itu and the development in jülich is also the topic of the lecture in this context.

it also became clear that the developments on the 4th generation nuclear power plants increase the risk of proliferation (risk of further proliferation of nuclear weapons) and thus entail the danger of international terrorism.

what was also shockingly understandable for the listeners: what criminal methods moormann's former employer used in the nuclear research center in jülich has acted. an accident in iaea category 4 to 5 (caused by an illegally manipulated moisture measuring device) was known internally and to the authority, but was kept secret “so as not to alarm the population”.
the fact that there were no nuclear and chemical explosions, no catastrophe like in chernobyl or fukushima, was only because the steam generator crack only increased slowly.

the serious increase in childhood leukemia around jülich in connection with radioactive tritium in the groundwater or when know-how was delivered to the apartheid state of south africa in 1988 despite the embargo were also reasons for him to to become a whistleblower.
the list of transgressions was or is long.

"in retrospect, it seems to me that the role of the supervisory authorities that made the jülich debacle possible: downplaying, concealing, cronyism... moormann concluded as the most problematic aspect.

i think the lecture showed us that the researchers at kit and jrc in karlsruhe and in the leopoldshafen and linkenheim districts are not allowed to research everything they are capable of keeping us all safe. and i believe that many researchers think the same way
